St. Augustine, FloridaThe Nation's Oldest City
This photo of the Bridge of Lions was taken from by the Carmel Lynn Fishing Charters' First Mate Carmel Cunningham. The Bridge of Lions was built in 1927 and connects St. Augustine with Anastasia Island and it's beautiful sandy beaches. The area, now known as St. Augustine, was originally inhabited by the Timucuan Indians and known as Seloy. In 1565 Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles settled at the site and renamed the village St. Augustine because the discovery coincided with the feast of St. Augustine de Hippo. The area was occupied and ruled by the Spanish and English alternately for several hundred years. It served as the capital of East Florida from 1821 until 1845, during the United States territorial period. In the late 1800's Henry Flagler came to town and developed St. Augustine into an elegant winter resort. Today, St. Augustine boasts of being the perfect blend of old world charm and modern conveniences. We like it here and know you will, too.
